National Center for Institutional Diversity

Future of Minority Studies National Research Project (FMS)

As a consortium of scholars and academic institutions with a primary interest in
minority identity, education, and social transformation, FMS represents a mobile think tank designed for two purposes: 1) to provide a collecting point and mentoring space for minority scholars from which they may establish a strong foothold in the academy; and
2) to offer a theoretical description of minority identity and experience of use in making arguments for the inclusion of minority studies based on contributions to the knowledge base and not merely for reasons of equitable representation. FMS is supported by the Mellon Foundation and a coalition of universities, including Cornell, Michigan, Oregon,
Spelman, Stanford, Syracuse, and Wisconsin. (Other institutions contributing funds for
events held by FMS include Hamilton College, Iowa State, Oregon, Puget Sound, and
Washington.)
