Working Groups

NCID-CRECH Partnership (Center for Research on Ethnicity, Culture, and Health): Following on the critical issues forum of November 30th, NCID and CRECH formed a partnership to spearhead progress in the area of health disparities, which resulted in a Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities Training Grant proposal to NIH. Together, we plan to further enhance the exemplary Promoting Ethnic Diversity in Public Health (PEDPH) Program, which seeks to increase and maintain the number of underrepresented students who apply, enroll and successfully complete doctoral studies in the School of Public health at the University of Michigan.

NCID South Africa Initiative: This working group, which emerged from the critical issues forum of December 14th, consists of NCID-affiliated faculty, staff and campus partners interested in diversity-related work in South Africa. This cross-national university partnership seeks ways to bridge innovative scholarship with a range of exemplary activities to empower traditionally marginalized people within multiracial democracies. It builds upon the rich tradition of innovative U-M activities with South Africa (i.e., South African Initiative) and dovetailing with the upcoming South Africa Delegation of top UM officials.

M-STEM Academy Proposal: The NCID has joined a team of faculty and administrators from STEM disciplines in developing a proposal for the National Science Foundation's STEP Grant. Having been selected internally as U-M's nomination, this proposal describes an academy that would help ensure that students from all kinds of backgrounds are attracted to and retained in STEM fields, which aligns with the State of Michigan's goal to become a biotech center. The NCID will be taking primarily responsibility for stimulating its innovation; helping to institutionalize the academy; and leveraging it as a national model through dissemination and other strategies.

NCID Encouraging the Filmmaking Experience (EFEX) Working Group: Already supporting the EFEX project through its 2007-2008 funding awards, the NCID has teamed up with the Ginsberg Center, Arts at Michigan, and the U-M Development Office to pursue additional support for the final editing and distribution of the feature film Bilal's Stand, which promises to become a powerful tool in promoting underrepresented students' interest in and access to higher education.
